Last month, we met members of Team Now at the London Marathon Store on Liverpool Street for our special London Marathon training day. Read on to find out how it went...
In around nine weeks, 250 of our incredible Team Now runners will be lining up in Greenwich ready to take on 26.2 miles of running as they complete the Virgin Money London Marathon. As well as a Breast Cancer Now running vest, fundraising pack and lots of incredible support and encouragement, we offer a training day in London to make sure our runners are as prepared as they possibly can be!
Last month, we headed to the London Marathon Store on Liverpool Street, armed with snacks, to meet the 31 members of Team Now that could make it to our training day. Our Director of Fundraising, Catherine, started things off, sharing some helpful fundraising tips, and Senior Research Officer, Fiona, got everyone moving while sharing some key facts about breast cancer.
As Team Now runner Megan beautifully expressed:
"The facts we received [on the day] made me realise even more why we were all there, and why all 26.2 miles matter."
We also had some motivating talks from Max, a previous Team Now London Marathon runner, who helped prepare our runners taking on their first (of many?!) London Marathons, and TJ, a personal trainer who shared some super helpful training and nutrition tips, as well as ways to prevent injury and make the most of your marathon.
The London Marathon store provided our runners with gait analysis, to help them get a better understanding of their running style and find the right running shoes. Having purchased new trainers, Team Now runner Ben managed a 15 mile run the next day with no shin splints!
The session ended with a 5k run taking in some of the sights that runners will experience on race day – and on a busy Saturday in London, it gave them some all-important practice at weaving in and out of a crowd!
The training day also gave boost to our runners' fundraising efforts. Ben said:
"Running over London Bridge in the knowledge that 12 weeks later (even less now!) it'll be the real thing, gave me the inspiration to pull the proverbial finger out on the fundraising front and I'm now nearly half way to my £3k target."
Ele’s favourite part of the training day was meeting the other Breast Cancer Now runners, and comparing training stories:
"It was great to see how everyone else was doing, and share tips (like which podcasts to listen to while running), and it was great to meet new running buddies for the long runs."
All in all, our London Marathon training day was an overwhelming success. It got both Team Now runners and staff excited for race day, and gave our inspirational team a new found determination for their training and fundraising. One of our amazing runners summed up the day perfectly:
"I’m well over the honeymoon stage of my training by now, but the marathon day definitely put me back on the right path!"
