It is with great sadness that we share the news that our supporter and former trustee, Sarah Illingworth, passed away on Tuesday from secondary breast cancer.

Sarah served as a trustee of Breakthrough Breast Cancer until our merger last year to become Breast Cancer Now. She was an inspirational colleague and friend who was passionate about the power of research, fundraising for Breakthrough alongside her work as a trustee.

Sarah also did a great deal to encourage openness in talking about cancer, regularly being outspoken and honest about her experiences of living with secondary breast cancer and blogging with characteristic dry wit.

Below she features in a powerful video about the reality of secondary breast cancer, in which she vividly describes the number of women dying from the disease as 'like three jumbo jets going down every month.'

Sarah was a Director on the Healthcare Executive Search and Selection team at Veredus, and had previously held senior fundraising roles at Carers Trust and the Samaritans. Our thoughts are with Sarah's husband, family and friends at this very difficult time – she will be greatly missed by us all.
