Responding to NICE final guidance that three tumour profiling tests will be available to guide adjuvant chemotherapy decisions in people with early breast cancer, Dr Emma Pennery, Clinical Director at Breast Cancer Care, says:

“This important decision means access to life-changing tumour profiling tests is now set in stone. Thousands of women with breast cancer in England could safely avoid enduring chemotherapy and its utterly devastating, often long-lasting, side effects – including hair loss, fatigue and problems with fertility.

“These tests will give both clinicians and women with breast cancer more confidence to know they are making the right treatment decision for them.

“Approving a selection of profiling tests indicates a bright future for increasingly tailored treatments for individuals. With more and more women living longer after breast cancer, we must ensure that treatment is not only successful, but allows women to live well.”
