As we tidy away the trappings of the festive season and put the past year behind us we may also think about the year ahead. Birthdays holidays and family occasions go into new diaries and calendars.
For many in treatment for breast cancer there'll be a point in 2013 when that treatment finishes. For some this will be a time to celebrate but it can also be the pause in which the shock of diagnosis and treatment is felt. Others find it a moment to breathe a sigh of relief and recover some sense of normality.
However you feel - and everyone is different - it can be a good time to try something new including some of our free UK-wide Moving Forward services.
This January we're proud to add our first Best Foot Forward walking groups.
In Manchester and Calderdale there's the chance to join others who've completed their hospital-based treatment in an enjoyable and manageable physical activity.
The short walks are designed for people of all abilities and fitness levels who want to get more active and feel better. So if you’ve never taken regular exercise before you can join in at your own pace. It’s a great way to walk with a relaxed and friendly group of people who’ve had similar experiences. Each walk finishes near a cafe.
We've recruited and trained leaders and the first walks have taken place.
Because being active is recommended for people who've had cancer and walking is excellent for overall health and fitness we plan to offer more Best Foot Forward walking groups across the UK. And we're looking for volunteers to facilitate them. So if you live in Salford Wythenshawe Halifax Huddersfield or South Yorkshire and might be interested this role please contact Lisa Holland our Volunteer Manager in the North on 0114 263 6496.
If you'd like to find out more about the walks call us on 0345 077 1893.
In the meantime if you're mulling over your New Year's resolutions and want to make more use of the support available at the end of your treatment have a look at the Moving Forward services on our website or call our free confidential Helpline on 0808 800 6000.
Go on give it a try: we're here for you.
