If you’re a first-time fundraiser or simply in need of some fresh inspiration, here’s our step-by-step guide to organising your very own wear it pink event at work...
Step 1: Register
First things first, you need to register for wear it pink. It doesn’t take long, and once it’s done, you’ll get one of our fabulous fundraising packs in the post. Only one person at work needs to register, and we can send extra materials if you want more! Registering also means we’ll be able to give you tailored help and advice whenever you want it.
Step 2: Set the date
Most people will be hosting their event in October, as this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pick a date that suits you best – whether this is an office day, a day most staff are in or a day you know customers will be keen to get involved – you’ll raise more money and have more fun.
Step 3: Let people know what you’re doing
The first person to tell is your boss or manager to make sure they’re happy for your wear it pink event to be at work. Having their support will make the whole process much smoother. However you communicate with colleagues and customers, whether it be posters, emails, WhatsApp or your company intranet, let everyone know when your event is happening. You can also use this invite to share your JustGiving page and start fundraising straight away.
Make sure you tell everyone why you’ll be wearing pink; this way people can support you and help you make it an incredible day.
Step 4: Choose your games and activities
Decide what exciting fundraising activities you want to do at your event and download and order your extra materials. There are so many things to do: bake sales (big money makers!); cake awards; sweepstakes; bingo; raffles; tombola; best outfit competition and anything else you can think of.
If you’re holding a raffle at work, it’s always worth asking local shops and businesses if they want to donate a prize or food for your fundraiser. Tell them that you’ll be taking part in Breast Cancer Now’s wear it pink day and that you’d like some prizes to give out on the day. Don’t be disheartened if they say no, sometimes it’s not in their control and there’s no harm in trying!
If you’re hosting your wear it pink either remotely or in a hybrid fashion, download your wear it pink video call background and share with your colleagues. Ask them to wear it pink and join a team video call. You could do our big pink quiz on the video call, or even play bingo or a sweepstake.
Here at Breast Cancer Now, people have different office days and so we dedicate a few days as ‘pink days’ and then hold one giant ‘wear it pink meeting’ virtually to share photos and announce winners!
Step 5: Enlist some helpers
A bake sale can be a hugely successful way to raise money. Ask everyone who’s happy to help to bake something for the event.
Do you know a great quizmaster or bingo caller? Does anyone fancy picking the best outfit? Assign these fun jobs to people in advance.
Step 6: What will you wear?
Plan ahead. If you're in an office that has a dress code, or have to wear a uniform, you can find other ways to wear it pink. Just get everyone to wear pink socks or ask us for some Breast Cancer Now pin badges or wristbands instead. If you're at home, why not do a best-dressed prize over video call? If you’re in a café, why not specifically bake some pink cakes for the day? Or if you’re in a gym, make sure signs are up well in advance to tell people to dig out their pinkest leggings!
If you’re a bigger organisation, each team can choose a different theme and you could award a prize for the best-dressed team to encourage everyone to get involved.
Step 7: Send reminders
Send a message around a week before your event, and another the day before to remind your colleagues to wear something pink, sharing the JustGiving link for them to donate. This won’t just remind people about your wear it pink day, but it will also get everyone excited for a day of wearing pink, eating cakes, playing games and raising money.
Step 8: Gift Aid forms
The last thing you need to do in the lead up to your wear it pink event is to make sure you’ve organised enough Gift Aid forms. Gift Aid allows us to claim back an extra 25% of each donation given to Breast Cancer Now by a UK taxpayer at no extra cost to them. This is an easy and free way to increase your donation!
Step 9: Social media
So, you’ve organised and planned, and the day is finally here! The last thing you need to do is to take pictures and share them with us!
You can tweet us @breastcancernow, tag Breast Cancer Now on Facebook or use the hashtag #WearItPink on Instagram and Tiktok. Just make sure you have everyone’s permission before posting!
You can also send us any photos at firstname.lastname@example.org - we absolutely love seeing what you got up to on the day, and we’re sure your friends and family will want to see what you’ve been doing too.
We hope this guide is useful in helping you put together an incredibly successful wear it pink day. You are doing something absolutely amazing – wearing pink, raising money, and making life-saving breast cancer research and life-changing support happen.
