Hormone therapy (also known as endocrine therapy) blocks the action of female hormones and can reduce the chance of your breast cancer coming back in the future.
The female hormone oestrogen is essential for normal sexual development. However, oestrogen can also encourage the growth of some breast cancers. Hormone therapies block the production of oestrogen or stop it from signalling to breast cancer cells.
Because hormone therapy interferes with the normal role of hormones in the body, it often causes side effects, including symptoms of the menopause.
