Shape the design of a clinical trial into breast cancer

Category: Patient or loved one

Review the participant information documents for a clinical trial to help researchers make sure that they're accessible and relevant for potential participants.

What’s the project about?

The Patient Engagement in Clinical Development Service (PECD) is part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research. They work with pharmaceutical and commercial companies to help them involve people with lived experience in their trials and research.

They’re supporting a company to develop and improve a clinical trial into breast cancer. They want to hear feedback from people affected by breast cancer on the information that they’ll provide to the participants.

This will help them to design a study that is focused on the needs of people diagnosed with breast cancer, their families, and their communities.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Renuka Salvi

Job title: Specialist Commercial Services Officer

Organisation: National Institute for Health and Care Research -

Email address: pecd@nihr.ac.uk

Who can take part?

You can take part if you’re over 18 and have been personally affected by breast cancer, either as a friend or family member, or through a personal diagnosis, including

  • DCIS
  • Stage 2 or 3 primary breast cancer
  • A local or regional recurrence of primary breast cancer
  • Secondary breast cancer

You also need to be able to access and use a word processing programme such as Microsoft Word to read the documents and fill out a feedback form.

Why do you want me to be involved?

Your involvement will help to shape and design a study that’s focused on the needs of the people diagnosed with breast cancer, their families, and their communities.

By taking part, you’ll help the company to better design a trial into breast cancer with the aim to improve research into it.

What will you ask me to do?

If you’re selected, you’ll be asked to read through draft documents and share your thoughts on how clearly the information is presented.

The researchers want to make sure that the materials are informative, accessible and engaging, and that the language is appropriate for potential participants and carers.

It should take you up to 2 hours to read the documents and complete the feedback form. You’ll have 10 days to complete your review and send back your comments.

The NIHR PECD Team will support you throughout this process and provide any information or guidance you may need.

The NIHR will reimburse you £50 for your time. You can read more about how this may impact tax an benefits on the NIHR website
