Join workshops about support for body image in young adults with cancer

Join a series of workshops to help researchers co-design resources to support body image in young people who’ve had a cancer diagnosis.

What’s the title of the study?

Co-designing a physical activity, social support and self-compassion intervention to improve body image among young adults (18-39 years) living with or beyond cancer.

What’s the project about?

A cancer diagnosis and treatment can have a negative impact on people's body image. As more young people are being diagnosed with cancer, it’s important to develop appropriate support to tackle specific issues they may face.

In this project, researchers want to co-design an intervention to support body image in young adults diagnosed with cancer. This intervention would combine physical activity, self-compassion and social support.

They’re holding a series of co-production workshops to design the intervention. Participants will include young adults affected by cancer, a healthcare professional, a specialist physical activity trainer and members of the research team.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Sairah Bi

Job title: PhD researcher

Organisation: University of Surrey

Email address: sb01908@surrey.ac.uk

Who can take part?

You can take part if you’re between 18 and 39 years old and have had a cancer diagnosis.

The researchers especially want to hear from people living with or beyond cancer who’ve struggled with body image.

Why do you want me to be involved?

Your insight will help ensure that the project is grounded in lived experience and addresses real unmet needs around body image.

This will help the researchers develop an intervention that is relevant to and more likely to be used by young adults living with or beyond cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

The researchers would like to invite you to attend 3 online workshops. Each workshop will last around 90 minutes, and they’ll take place over a few weeks.

The workshops will explore topics such as:

  • Experiences of body image after a cancer diagnosis
  • Your views on physical activity
  • Social support and self-compassion
  • What support feels helpful or unhelpful
  • Preferences around the content, format, and delivery of the intervention.

If you want to, you’ll also have the opportunity to be further involved in the project, for example by reviewing materials or advising on future stages of the research.

You’ll be offered a payment of £25 per hour (plus £5 per session to cover internet connection costs). This totals £122.5 per participant.

How do I get involved?

If you’re interested in taking part, please complete the expression of interest form.

You’ll be asked to read the participant information sheet and consent form before you complete the survey.

The researchers will then be in touch to organise a short call with you to get to know you, and for you to ask any questions.

When’s the deadline?

15 January 2025
