A chance to shape Breast Cancer Now’s research

Category: Patient or loved one

Apply to join our scientific advisory group and shape our decisions about the research we fund to ensure that we’re having the biggest impact.

What’s the project about?

In our new strategy, we’ve committed to doubling the amount of money we spend on research by 2030. In this, we particularly want to focus on breast cancer dormancy and recurrence.

To help achieve this, we are launching a fundraising campaign which e aims to raise an extra £50 million over 5 years.

We’re setting up 2 groups to support this work. The groups will work closely with each other and with Breast Cancer Now staff and trustees:

  • A campaign board
  • A scientific advisory group

The campaign board will shape the campaign and get support from external supporters.

The scientific advisory group will support the campaign board by advising on which research projects we fund to ensure that our research has the most impact for people affected by breast cancer.

We’re recruiting for a new member for the scientific advisory group.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Eleanor Garratt-Smith

Job title: Research programmes manager

Organisation: Breast Cancer Now

Email address: eleanor.garrattsmith@breastcancernow.org

Who can take part?

You can apply to join the group if you’ve been personally affected by breast cancer, either through a personal diagnosis or that of a friend or loved one.

You don’t have to have a research or scientific background.

Why do you want me to be involved?

As part of the group, you can help make sure that the research we fund reflects the needs and priorities of people affected by breast cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

Membership of the group will be for up to 3 years. There may be an option to renew for a further 3 years if the project goes beyond this.

As part of the group, you’ll be asked to attend 2 or 3 online meetings a year. At these meetings, you’ll provide your experience as someone affected by breast cancer, and contribute to discussions.

You’ll be able to claim an honorarium for meetings up to £100 for a full day, in line with our payment for involvement policy.

If you’d like to find out more about our payment for involvement policy, and how it may affect tax and benefits, please contact the involvement team at voices@breastcancernow.org

How do I get involved?

If you’re interested in applying, please download and complete the expression of interest form and return them to Eleanor at eleanor.garrattsmith@breastcancernow.org
