Complete a survey about a new type of breast imaging technology which could be more accurate and comfortable than mammograms, and help contribute to recommendations for its use for breast screening in Wales.
What’s the project about?
Breast screening is normally performed using mammograms, taking X-rays of the breast whilst it’s compressed. Many women find this uncomfortable, and it has some limitations, for example identifying breast cancer in dense breasts.
Cone beam technology is a new tool which can create a more accurate 3D image of the breast in several seconds. It doesn’t involve compressing the breast and is more comfortable. It can also take a biopsy at the same time as the imagining.
Health Technology Wales assesses different technology and produces guidance on its use for the NHS Wales. They’re currently reviewing cone beam imaging to assess whether it could be used for screening in Wales.
To support their review, they want to hear from people who’ve been affected by breast cancer about how they’d feel about this technology being used in their screening appointments.
Who’s organising it?
Name of project lead: Alice Evans
Job title: Patient and Public Involvement Manager
Organisation: Health Technology Wales
Email address: healthtechnology@wales.nhs.uk
Who can take part?
This is open to anyone in the UK who’s had a personal diagnosis of breast cancer.
Why do you want me to be involved?
By taking part, you can help Health Technology Wales understand how people affected by breast cancer feel about the new cone beam technology. This will help them review the new technology and could inform what breast screening technology is used in Wales in the future.
What will you ask me to do?
You’ll be asked to complete an online survey.
In the survey, you’ll be asked about your experience of screening and being diagnosed with breast cancer. You’ll also be asked about your thoughts on cone beam imaging, and how likely you’d be to attend a screening appointment if it were being used.
How do I get involved?
Please complete the survey.
If you have any questions, or would like support completing the survey, please get in touch with the team at healthtechnology@wales.nhs.uk.
When’s the deadline?
9 January 2025
Get involved
Complete the survey and help Health Technology Wales understand whether cone beam imaging could improve people’s experience of screening, and inform their recommendations for NHS Wales.
