I was diagnosed with breast cancer towards the end of 2022.
It was picked up from a routine mammogram. I feel so lucky I caught it early and so grateful that this service is offered. I tell people all the time to ‘check, check, check’ their breasts and go to their screenings.
I had surgery to remove tissue around the area, then radiotherapy and now I take Letrozole every day. I'm turning 60 this year which feels like a victory. After my diagnosis, there were times I wasn't sure I'd see this day. That's why wear it pink is so important. It's not just a fundraising event, it's hope for the future.
As soon as I could, my daughter and I got to work fundraising
My daughter, Rhian, held a fundraiser in 2023 by making 3 pink ceramic pots and holding a raffle on Instagram. She raised £3,474 for Breast Cancer Now. Whereas I took on the Walk 100 Miles challenge. I was absolutely over the moon when I finished the challenge. I walk every weekday at 6.30am with my friend and dog for 2.5 miles, but it was still a challenge to make it up to 100 miles in 31 days. I raised quite a lot of money which was my main aim, and this spurred me on throughout the challenge.
We enjoyed pink treats for wear it pink
I’m a very sociable person and love nothing more than hosting a do, so fundraising for wear it pink just made sense. I held an open house for friends and family to pop in throughout the day, for a cup of tea, coffee or glass of pink fizz. There were pink treats on offer such as pink biscuits, sweets and cake and everyone kindly donated.
The highlight of the event for me was everyone coming together throughout the day. We were able to discuss how breast cancer has affected them and their families. I felt there was a real sense of camaraderie.
We were also able to make people aware of Breast Cancer Now. I think it’s so important that people know Breast Cancer Now exist and is there for people to turn to in their hour of need.
My top tip would be to give people plenty of notice, so they can make a note of it in their diaries to attend.
It’s important to share your story
Be sure to make people aware of how important the event is to you and why you are holding it. Not only will this help to raise vital funds, but it will raise awareness of breast cancer too.
