Kerry started fundraising after her friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.

My journey as a community fundraising volunteer and campaigner started in 2006 when our friend, Julie Mortimer, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. I threw my energy into organising a sponsored fundraising walk called the Crocus Walk. It allowed all of us who knew Julie, along with many others, to channel ourselves into something positive.

The walk was a light-bulb moment for me

I knew that fundraising and spreading awareness would help more people like Julie. So, I became more involved with the charity. I lobbied in parliament and held events, cheque collections and awareness talks in our community. I also encouraged others to hold events too, which I supported them to do.

Julie sadly passed away on 10 December 2010, aged just 41. She gave me a beautiful letter, which I carry with me at all times. To honour her memory, I threw myself into fundraising and raising vital awareness. It has become ‘Julie’s Legacy’.

I’ve met so many incredible people along my fundraising journey

I’ve made lifelong friends across the world and I’ve sadly lost friends to breast cancer. However, I truly believe in Breast Cancer Now’s vision that by 2050, people affected by breast cancer will live and live well. For that reason, I’ve dedicated my life to supporting the charity.

I always hold a wear it pink event in October

Last year, we had a big pink day in a beauty salon, as well as a school disco for adults. We had a DJ, a raffle and a tuck shop! My highlights of the day are always seeing people engaging in the fundraising events and sharing their stories.

My top tip is to advertise well

Get the word out to your friends, family and colleagues. You can use the posters in the fundraising pack to share what you’re doing.

Also, try to have as many different fundraising elements on the day as you can. For example, hold a raffle, organise games or sell cakes.
