Someone Like Me volunteer

A confidential service that gives people the opportunity to talk openly about breast cancer.

Our Someone Like Me service matches people affected by breast cancer to a trained volunteer who has been through something similar and had similar concerns.

What is Someone Like Me?

Someone Like Me is a confidential service. We match people with volunteers who get the issues someone might be facing. People can ask questions and talk openly, without worrying about someone else's feelings.

What will I be doing?

As a trained Someone Like Me volunteer, you'll be matched with someone who has a similar experience to you. You'll offer them support, answer their questions, and talk through their concerns.

You'll grasp the issues someone might be facing. Whether this is about cancer and treatment. Or about the emotional and physical effect on life.

What skills and qualities do I need?

  • To be non-judgemental, empathetic, and compassionate
  • To understand personal boundaries and self-care
  • To be a good listener and communicator
  • To be able to refer to your own experiences
  • To be able to plan and organise your time and have good time-keeping
  • To work with Breast Cancer Now's policies and guidelines on confidentiality, safeguarding, and data protection
  • To share our commitment to ensuring the support we give is inclusive and accessible to people from diverse backgrounds

You'll need access to a laptop or similar device with internet, and a phone to make calls. You'll need to be confident using both. This is so you can take part in the training and get referrals.

What's the time commitment?

This is a home-based role and we hope you'll give 1 to 2 hours a week to make calls to service users.

What are the next steps?

Applications for Someone Like Me volunteers are open until Sunday 15 February at 11pm. After this date, you can register your interest to volunteer and we'll be in touch.
