Take part in a pilot study exploring whether an online programme can support wellbeing and positive psychological outcomes for people living with and beyond cancer.

What’s the title of the study?

Finding My Way-UK - Promoting Benefit Finding in People Living with and Beyond Curatively Treated Cancer: Pilot Trial

What’s the project about?

A cancer diagnosis can be a life-altering experience and is often accompanied by emotional challenges. Some people also speak about positive psychological changes that take place over time. These can include a greater appreciation of life, strengthened relationships with friends and family or personal growth. This is sometimes called “benefit finding”.

This project is exploring whether an online programme called Finding My Way-UK can support people living with and beyond cancer. The programme includes six self-guided modules designed to help people manage common challenges during and after treatment.

The researchers want to understand whether the programme is helpful and easy to use. And how it could be improved before being tested in a larger study. The findings will help inform future research and support services for people affected by cancer.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Kian Hughes

Job title: PhD Student

Organisation: Edge Hill University

Email address: hugheski@edgehill.ac.uk

Who can take part?

You can take part if you:

  • Are aged 16 or older
  • Live in the UK or the Isle of Man
  • Have been diagnosed with any cancer within the last 12 months
  • Are receiving, or have received, curative cancer treatment
  • Have internet access and an email address (or are willing to set one up with support)
  • Are comfortable reading and understanding English

Why do you want me to be involved?

By taking part, you’ll help researchers understand whether this type of online support feels helpful and relevant for people living with and beyond cancer.

Your experiences will help improve the programme and guide future research into accessible psychological support for people affected by breast cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

If you choose to take part, you’ll first complete an online questionnaire about your background, wellbeing and experiences. This takes around 20–30 minutes.

You’ll then be randomly assigned to one of two groups:

  • One group will receive access to the Finding My Way-UK online programme for four weeks. The programme includes six modules with information, activities and tools to support people living with and beyond cancer.
  • The other group will receive a digital information pack outlining national support services.

All participants will be asked to complete follow-up questionnaires after four weeks and again three months later. Each follow up questionnaire takes around 10-15 minutes.

How do I get involved?

To register your interest, or to find more information about the study, email hugheski@edgehill.ac.uk. The research team will then provide more information and a link to the screening and consent form.

When’s the deadline?

31 May 2026
