A survey about using AI in breast cancer screening

Category: Patient or loved one

Complete a survey about whether you’d be happy for your mammogram images to be shared with an AI platform to analyse, and support a trial which looks to improve screening in the UK.

What’s the title of the study?

EDITH: Early Detection using Information Technology in Health

What’s the project about?

The EDITH trial is looking at using AI to analyse mammograms to detect breast cancer. It’s funded by the by the UK government through the National Institute for Health and Care Research.

The trial aims to reduce pressure on the screening service by reducing the number of radiologists needed to analyse a mammogram - from 2 to 1. This would mean that they have more time to carry out screenings, which would cut waiting lists and save more lives.

The trial will be carried out with nearly 700,000 women across 30 screening sites.

In order for the trial to be run effectively, the researchers need to be able to send patient data to the AI platform to analyse, without having to ask consent from every participant. Patients would be told that AI is being used, and they can ask for it not to be used in their case.

The researchers therefore want to understand whether people would be happy for their data to be used in this way.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Professor Sian Taylor-Phillips

Job title: Professor of Screening

Organisation: University of Warwick

Email address: edith@warwick.ac.uk

Who can take part?

The survey is open to anyone, whether or not they’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer or are currently getting screening.

Why do you want me to be involved?

In order for the trial to happen, the researchers need to understand whether people are happy for their data to be shared with AI. By completing the survey, you’ll be enabling this important research which could improve cancer detection rates and save lives.

What will you ask me to do?

The researchers would like you to complete a simple anonymous survey. It should only take 10 mins at the most to read and complete.

How do I get involved?

Please complete the survey

If you have any questions or have trouble accessing the survey, please email the Edith team at edith@warwick.ac.uk

When’s the deadline?

31 October 2025
