Developing breast cancer training for GPS

What’s the project about?

GatewayC is a educational platform for primary care professionals, mainly GPs. They are creating a 1 hour module on early diagnosis of breast cancer which will include:

• Risk factors and statistics
• Signs and Symptoms/Presentations in primary care
• Investigations
• Genomics (including BRCA)

They are also hoping to include information on the poorer prognosis of Black women and Ethnic minority groups compared to White women in terms of breast cancer diagnosis. And a section on endocrine therapy, specifically the side effects and what primary care can do.

They’d like to include stories from people who’ve had breast cancer, to help highlight to GPs patients’ experiences.

Who can take part?

You can take part if you’ve had a personal diagnosis of primary breast cancer, and either

• Have family history of breast cancer
• Have the BRCA gene mutation
• Were a younger age at diagnosis

You’ll ideally have been diagnosed through a referral form your GP, but this isn’t necessary.

Why do you want me to be involved?

The aim of the training is to highlight opportunities for earlier diagnosis and help GPs recognise potential red flags. By sharing your experience, you will help to showcase why it's so important for GPs to increase their knowledge on breast cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

GatewayC would start with a quick Teams call to see if the collaboration feels like a good fit. If they’d like to include you as a case study, they’ll arrange to do a recorded interview with you. This would ideally be in person, in the North West of England. However, they’re willing to be flexible on location and can offer reimbursement for transport.

If they don’t decide to use your story as a case study, they may still use the information from the Teams Call to help develop their courses. Or they may collate multiple stories into an anonymous case study.
