Nutrition and exercise information during breast cancer
Complete an online survey about what information you received about nutrition and exercise during breast cancer treatment, and help researchers improve provision for people in the future.
What’s the title of the study?
Understanding patient experiences and information needs about nutrition and physical activity during cancer treatment
University of Southampton Ethics reference: 110081
What’s the project about?
We know that exercise and eating well can help people with breast cancer during and after treatment to manage side effects and improve their overall health. But not everyone gets the right amount of information, or information that meets their specific needs.
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Cancer and Nutrition Collaboration’s patient involvement panel is working with researchers to understand what information people were given during breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. They hope this will help improve the information that people are given.
Who’s organising it?
Name of project leads: Fiona Davey; Dr Stephen Wooton
Job title: Project Manager; Emeritus Associate Professor in Nutrition
Organisation: NIHR Cancer and Nutrition Collaboration; University of Southampton
Email address: fiona.davey@nihr.ac.uk; saw@soton.ac.uk
Who can take part?
You can take part if you were diagnosed with primary or metastatic breast cancer after January 2021, and were treated on the NHS.
Why do you want me to be involved?
By taking part, you can help researchers understand how to improve the information that people receive on cancer and nutrition during and after treatment. This could lead to better support and outcomes for people in the future.
What will you ask me to do?
The researchers would like you to complete an anonymous online survey. It should take around 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
The questions will cover:
- What information you were given during treatment about nutrition or exercise
- Whether you found the information helpful
- What you did because of the information
- Any challenges you had following the advice
You will also be asked some information about yourself, such as your age range, gender, ethnicity, education, and type of treatment received. This information will help the researchers understand the diversity of people who have taken part in this study and whether respondents are representative of the UK population as a whole.
You do not have to answer any questions who do not feel comfortable answering. Responses are anonymous and no one will be able to link your answers to you.
How do I get involved?
Please complete the online survey. The participant information sheet and consent form are at the beginning of the survey.
If you have any questions, you can get in touch with Fiona at fiona.davey@nihr.ac.uk.
When’s the deadline?
30 September 2026
Please note this study may close sooner if the required number of participants is reached before the closing date.
