Shape research into Black women’s experiences of breast cancer

Join an advisory panel and shape a study investigating Black women’s experience of breast cancer in the UK.

What’s the project about?

Research has shown that Black women are more likely to experience delays in diagnosis and be diagnosed at a later stage of breast cancer. Researchers at the University of Birmingham want to better understand Black women’s experiences of being diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK.

They’ll carry out interviews to explore women’s experiences from first noticing symptoms, to seeking help, attending appointments, and receiving a diagnosis. They hope the findings will help improve understanding of what can affect diagnosis, and help improve care for Black women in the future.

They’re looking for people to join the advisory panel for the study, to ensure that the research is relevant for and beneficial to Black women in the UK.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Georgia Clancy

Job title: Research fellow

Organisation: University of Birmingham

Email address: g.e.clancy@bham.ac.uk

Who can take part?

The advisory panel is open to Black women (African and Caribbean ethnicity) with lived experience of breast cancer in the UK.

Why do you want me to be involved?

By joining the panel and contributing to the study design, you can help the researchers make sure that they ask the right questions, and recruit and conduct the research in a culturally sensitive way.

What will you ask me to do?

The researchers would like you to join an advisory panel to help guide the research. You’ll help shape the study at different stages, including:

  • Reviewing participant materials
  • Advising on recruitment
  • Helping understand the findings
  • Supporting how to share the research.

You don’t have to have any previous experience of being involved in research. This is a two-year study and there will likely be 3 to 4 meetings per year, usually online. You’ll be offered £25 per hour to thank you for your time.

How do I get involved?

If you would like more information or are interested in joining the group, please contact the Georgia Clancy at g.e.clancy@bham.ac.uk.

When’s the deadline?

30 June 2026
