Join a project advisory group to help researchers design a research study to find the best way to treat low-risk DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ).

What’s the project about?

Researchers at Bristol University want to design a research study to find the best way to treat a condition in the breast called low-risk DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). DCIS is made up of unusual cells, but doctors do not know if these cells will always turn into breast cancer.

At the moment, most women with low-risk DCIS have an operation to remove the cells as well as some healthy breast tissue. This may not be needed, and the researchers want to find out if a simpler treatment could work just as well.

They want to make sure that the future study compares treatments in a way that is acceptable to women with DCIS. And that it measures effects of treatments that patients think are important, such as the risk of developing a cancer in the future or side effects.

They’re looking for women to join the project advisory group, to help guide the study.

Who can take part?

You can take part if you’re a women aged over 18 who’s had a personal diagnosis and been treated for DCIS.

The researchers are particularly keen to hear from people from Black African, Asian, and Caribbean heritage communities who are often underrepresented in research.

Why do you want me to be involved?

By joining the group, you’ll help the researchers make sure that the study reflects the priorities of people with DCIS. And that the outcomes benefit people diagnosed in the future.

What will you ask me to do?

As a group member, you’ll attend 2-3 online meetings. Meetings will last around 90 minutes and you’ll discuss different aspects of the study as it progresses. There may also be some optional face-to-face meetings. If you want to take part but aren’t able to attend meetings, there’s also the chance to contribute via email or telephone.

The project will last around 5 years but you can be involved as long as you wish. You do not need any specific skills – the researchers wish to work with people who would like to help make our research better. They can provide some support and training.

You’ll be offered £25 per hour for your time (e.g., £37.50 for 90-minute meetings).
