Understanding breast cancer together: a patient forum
What’s the event about?
This is a new patient forum, developed with and for people with breast cancer. The event is hosted by the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at Oxford Population Health and the Oxford Cancer Centre.
The day will bring together patients, researchers, healthcare professionals and cancer charities to explore some of the questions that matter after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Through expert presentations and discussion, we will create an open and supportive environment where everyone can learn from one another, share perspectives and build a better understanding of how breast cancer information and communication can be improved.
Event description
The forum will run from 9:45am to 4pm. There will be 3 sessions during the day:
Session 1: Social media, misinformation and disinformation
Hear from experts in the field about the use of social media for people with breast cancer, what is trustworthy information, and what the impact of misinformation can be.
Interactive breakout discussions on social media and breast cancer
The breakout discussions provide an opportunity for all attendees to learn from one another, share perspectives, and explore how social media can better support people affected by breast cancer. You will explore what works well, what challenges remain, and how to improve the way reliable breast cancer information is communicated and accessed online.
Session 2: Understanding breast cancer research
Hear from a panel of researchers and patients involved in research about different types of research studies, why they matter, and the importance of patient involvement.

The organisers want to hear from diverse voices and welcome attendees from all communities, particularly those form ethnic minority backgrounds.

Parking is limited in Oxford and so please take public transport where possible. However, if you have access needs, limited parking spaces can be made available. Please email oxfordcancerppi@medsci.ox.ac.uk for more information.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day. You’ll be able to give and dietary needs on the registration form.
The event will be photographed but not recorded.
The event is free to attend. Breast cancer patients will be offered £50 payment as a thank you for attending.
