Carol’s story

A woman dressed in pink with pink hair, smiling

I had to put all my energy into looking after myself

I was diagnosed in 2017 after discovering a lump on my right breast. I had 2 lumps, grade 2/3 ductal carcinoma and estrogen positive. I also had lymph node involvement.

My treatment plan was primary chemotherapy with docetaxel and EC. After good results from the chemo (lumps shrinking considerably), I was given a lumpectomy and a course of radiotherapy.

I had a year of focusing on treatment where I didn't work. I just didn’t have the physical and mental capacity for teaching. I had to put all my energy into looking after myself. The chemo can be very debilitating and my cycle meant that I'd have a week of feeling awful then slowly but surely gaining some normality again.

I embraced my bald head!

I’m a very positive and smiley kind of girl. And I dealt with my cancer in the same way.

I embraced my bald head, gave up on the cold cap after the first chemo and got my hair shaved off. I loved playing around with scarves, hats and wigs. I even had a henna crown painted on my head! It was stunning.

I had different friends come to my chemo sessions and we would make the most of being around London Bridge, enjoying the food, museums and art exhibitions.

Taking part in Wear It Pink

I had a Wear It Pink party when my treatment ended and every year since then.

Last year I turned 60 and had the most fantastic Wear It Pink birthday party at the iconic Rivoli Ballroom in Lewisham. In the lead up to the party, we sold tickets for the event through Eventbrite.

On the night, we had a number of items that guests could purchase by donating, such as pink feather boas, pink heart shaped glasses and some badges provided by the band that played.

We left our donation pink bucket on the table and trusted people would take the item they wanted and donate, and they certainly did. I think we raised about £300 on the night! We made sure that there was information about breast cancer available through posters and leaflets.

Nearly 10 years cancer free and I am loving life

I’m nearly 10 years cancer free, recently retired and loving life! I’m eternally grateful to my family and friends, the doctors and nurses and other professionals that have been part of my cancer journey over the years. That part of my life has helped to mould the person who I am today.

It's made me appreciate how important it is to approach everything with determination and positivity, and to make the most of every opportunity that comes our way while we're on this beautiful earth! Don't sweat the small stuff and Iive it large!
