Breast cancer diagnosis and mental health

Take part in a study exploring if living a life that’s meaningful to you (valued living) is associated with post-traumatic growth for people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The study's full title is 'Values and life after breast cancer: A brief values video-based intervention for people who have experienced breast cancer'.

What’s the study about?

This research project is looking to understand the link between valued living and post-traumatic growth. Valued living means living a life that is meaningful to you, and post-traumatic growth is how people can sometimes experience positive benefits after difficult experiences.

The researchers want to understand how this impacts mental health, including levels of well-being, depression and anxiety. They also want to understand how mental health and psychological services can best support people who’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer.

They’re also exploring whether a video-based intervention can help improve mental health outcomes.

Who can take part?

You can take part if you've finished active cancer treatment within the last 5 years for primary breast cancer, and your cancer is now in remission.

You must also be over 18, live in the UK and be fluent in English.

You cannot take part if you have secondary breast cancer, cancer recurrence or have received any other secondary cancer diagnosis.

Why do you want me to be involved?

Your involvement will help the researchers better understand how a breast cancer diagnosis impacts mental health. This will also help to develop ways to support those who have had an experience of breast cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

You’ll complete an online questionnaire about your experience of breast cancer and different factors that may have affected your wellbeing. This should take 20 minutes to finish.

You’ll also have the opportunity to help test a video intervention by watching 2 short videos (which are 5 minutes each) over 2 weeks.

Then, you’ll complete 3 more online questionnaires after 2 weeks, 1 month and 6 months. These should take 10 minutes to finish.

How do I get involved?

Please complete the questionnaire. You’ll find the full study details in an information sheet, and you’ll also need to fill in a consent form.

If you have any questions, you can email Aifric at s2271800@ed.ac.uk.

When’s the deadline?

The deadline is 31 December 2024.
