A study exploring the experiences and support needs of people whose romantic partner was diagnosed with cancer as a young adult.

What's the title of the study?

Exploring the experiences and support needs of romantic partners of young adults with cancer.

What’s the study about?

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it doesn’t affect just one person. It affects the people closes to them too.

This study focuses on the experiences of people whose partner was diagnosed with cancer as a young adult. The researchers want to understand the emotional impact, the practical challenges, and how cancer can affect a relationship.

They also want to learn more about the support partners receive, what they find helpful, and where support is missing.

By listening to these experiences, the study aims to identify gaps in support and help shape better resources for partners and couples facing cancer during young adulthood.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Iris Liu

Job title: Research Student

Organisation: University College London

Email address: yihan.iris.liu.25@ucl.ac.uk

Who can take part?

You can take part if you:

  • Are aged 18 or over
  • Are a current or former romantic partner of someone who was aged 18 to 39 when they were diagnosed with cancer
  • Were in the relationship for at least 3 months at the time of the diagnosis
  • Can speak English

Why do you want me to be involved?

Partners often play a vital role during and after cancer, but their experiences can be overlooked.

By sharing your story, you can help researchers understand what life is really like for partners of young adults with cancer. Your insights could help improve support for future couples facing similar challenges and ensure partners' needs are better recognised.

What will you ask me to do?

If you choose to take part, you’ll be invited to take part in a one-off interview, lasting around 45 to 60 minutes.

The interview can take place online or by phone, whichever suits you best.

You’ll be asked about:

  • How your partner’s cancer affected you emotionally
  • The practical impact on your life
  • How your relationship was affected
  • The support you received
  • The support you feel was missing

As a thank you for your time, you’ll receive a £5 voucher after taking part.

How do I get involved?

To take part, please email Iris at yihan.iris.liu.25@ucl.ac.uk.

She'll then arrange a convenient time for your interview and provide further information about what taking part involves.

When’s the deadline?

31 July 2026
