Breathwork and wellbeing for people with breast cancer
Take part in a focus group to help shape a study into the benefits of breathwork for people living with or beyond breast cancer
What’s the title of the study?
The impact of breathwork on physical and mental wellbeing in breast cancer patients.
What’s the project about?
Breathing exercises are known to reduce stress and support wellbeing. Researchers are designing a PhD studentship which will explore the potential benefits of regular, guided breathwork on physical and mental health for people with breast cancer.
They're currently applying for funding for the project, and want to hear from people with breast cancer about whether they feel the research is relevant and beneficial.
Who’s organising it?
Name of project lead: Dr Liam Harper
Job title: Senior Lecturer
Organisation: Manchester Metropolitan University
Email address: l.harper@mmu.ac.uk
Who can take part?
You can take part if you've had a personal diagnosis of breast cancer. This includes:
DCIS
Stage 1, 2 or 3 primary breast cancer
A local or regional recurrence of primary breast cancer
Metastatic breast cancer
Why do you want me to be involved?
By sharing your views on the study, you can help the researchers make sure that the research will be beneficial to people living with or beyond breast cancer. Your input and ideas will directly inform a funding application and ensure that the research methods are appropriate and accessible.
What will you ask me to do?
The researchers would like you to join an online focus group on 17 November. It will be held on Microsoft Teams and will last about an hour. The workshop will be held at either 12pm (noon) or 7pm, depending on which option the most people can make.
The researchers will give an overview of the research and there will be a chance for you to discuss your views on the research.
There may be an opportunity to be a named collaborator on the funding application. If you're interested, you could also be part of a steering committee that will be formed as part of the research, who will support the research from start to finish.
How do I get involved?
If you'd like to take part, or have any questions, please contact Dr Liam Harper at l.harper@mmu.ac.uk, and let him know which of the workshops you're able to attend.
When’s the deadline?
10 November 2026
